All You Need To Know About Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) modulates brain activity for therapeutic benefits. It has successfully treated depression, OCD, and other neurological problems. The TMS therapy is non-invasive and can help when other therapies fail. Negative effects are usually mild and temporary.

What is transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS)?

Magnetic coil-based non-invasive transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) regulates brain activity. This 1985 treatment for mental health and brain illnesses is now widely used.

Different types of TMS

The TMS therapy can be carried out in several distinct manners. They are all related to the magnet's intensity or the magnetic field's numerous applications.

Magnet strength: Magnet force is measured in teslas (T). The magnetic field strength of most TMS magnets is 1.5T to 2T, comparable to an MRI scanner. TMS magnets are substantially smaller than MRI magnets, narrowing their magnetic fields.

Pulse frequency: A pulse occurs every time the magnetic field switches on and off. Frequency measures pulses per second. TMS uses low-frequency (1 Hz) or high-frequency (5-10 Hz) pulses. TMS that repeats pulse sequences is called repetitive TMS (rTMS).

Pulse patterns: Several pulse patterns are available for the therapeutic use of TMS. Theta-burst stimulation (TBS) is a good example of this type of therapy. TBS consists of 15 pulses per second, generated by a triplet of 5 Hz bursts. By using these burst patterns, treatment times can be cut in half or even more.

Magnetic coil type and stimulation target: It is possible to direct various magnetic coils at different regions of the brain. Deep TMS (dTMS) can reach deeper brain areas than rTMS and TBS using an H-shaped helmed coil. OCD is only one of the many disorders that have shown promising results when treated with TMS.
